The original client was not just awesome, it was inspiring. Sad to see it tossed.

Nice collection anyway....

This is overkill for most games. It is usually beneficial to have AI conform to the same rules and situations as players will be subjected to, but ultimately "cheating" saves time and will only be viewed as "cheating" when it's blatant.

There's a lot of good comments about ray tracing at reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/programming/info/6noi6/comments/
Of course, there's also the Carmack defense against raytracing: http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=532&type=overview

Agreed, some sort of undo (for burying or bumping, I accidentally bumped a spam once), would be fantastic... maybe just leave the opposite button enabled, so if I bump something I wanted to bury, I can switch my vote?
Your change is fantastic btw, I love being able to see actual upcoming news articles now. Thanks for taking the time, I know you're busy with your other project (which is awesome), but devbump is way too good to die to spam!

I think devblogs are a bit of a must doing indie development. My project is a bit too early in development to solicit any meaningful reader feedback just yet, but once it's further along, I think the blog will prove a useful tool for further evolution of the project. When you don't have shareholders that you are beholden to, there's no better people to solicit feedback from than those interested in your game! Similarly, there's no big corporate entity marketing for you, and a devblog is a great way to start doing that yourself.

With the new starting bump at zero, wouldn't it be too easy to accidentally bury a non-spam article?
Also, can we have a un-bury option? I had accidentally buried an article (luckily, other people was able to bump it to the front page) and I couldn't find the option to un-bury.
Keep up the good work and updates on the site. :)

My own take: Developer blogs/journals provides the community with a nice feedback on what you are working on. Yes, technical posts are boring to those who can't understand but in my opinion, it provides three good things:
- A good explanation of a game mechanic straight from the developer's mouth: Most people won't understand why I cut out the super sword of death +3 but through the blog, I can explain that if it was combined with the sickle of life + 300 HP potions, its insta win.
- A place to build on your thoughts: Gee, why did I removed the pause menu again? Oh yeah, back on March 15, I made a post about changing our single game to an MMORPG just cause everyone is doing it. yay
- It builds good developer/customer relationship: gamers might link to your post, defend them or even criticize them. That is good as it shows that you listen to their feedback and actually talk to the fans.
On the question of a technical post not being interesting to non-techincal people, it simply boils down to your communication style. Some blogs which I enjoy that was able to give technical post yet present it to an easy to read post includes: Jeff Atwood's coding horror (http://codinghorror.com/), sirlin's personal blog site (http://sirlin.net/) and his excellent Street Fighter 2 HD rebalancing articles (http://www.sirlin.net/archive/category/street-fighter-hd-remix/), and others.

*UPDATE* I have just made some modifications to the site that weight bury's much more heavily than previously. Now a story only needs 1 more bury than the number of votes it has in order to be discarded. Since most spam only has 1 vote, only two people burying it will be enough to send it to the scrap heap now. So if you see any spam, be quick to bury it!

Sorry, I have been very busy lately, and have not been able to regularly check the site for spam. I need some people to come forward and volunteer to become moderators so that the site can be kept free from spam. Unfortunately, this site has always been something I have tried to keep going in my spare moments and I have extremely few spare moments these days. I will need help to keep the site alive. If you are a regular poster and are interested in helping, please contact me at marshmonkey@gmail.com

Who is the admin anyway, and why is he/she doing nothing about it? At this rate of spam, this site is, sadly, rapidly dying.
At the very least there needs to be some "deputy" ops who can help clean up the spam.

Yeah it's pretty crazy. The odd thing is what's with the spam for Indian Tourism and funeral arrangements? I guess it's a break from ads for hot young women and "male enhancement". :-)
Yeah, filters are good. The "upcoming" stuff might get lost in the noise...

I would like to add two games that I think has good "Pillar Values":
a) Warcraft 3. When I play war3, I have access to all the commands to micromanage my units. Almost all the keys are there to help me micro. From pressing ALT to see the health of my units to the keyboard shortcuts to allow me to give commands to my units.
b) Any fighting game. I believe that fighting games are the perfect example of a genre where the gameplay adheres to their primary Pillar Value: beating the crap out of your opponents.
We could argue that fighting games adds verbs/commands to the player which he can use (for example, a fireball, uppercut, etc). While some games add more verbs/commands to a character than is absolutely necessary (like say Soul Calibur and Tekken), they don't distract to the Pillar Value: beating the crap out of your opponents. :)

The spammers are getting creative. Can't we do a ban or filter for posts with Hotels, Batteries, Charms, Jewel, 14K, etc? You know, keywords that doesn't have anything to do with game development/programming/design?

I agree with the article. I haven't seen a good 3rd person camera, either. I would like to add that RE4's camera is good because they uses a widescreen layout. So you see a lot more on your character's side. I think Ninja Gaiden's camera failed because a) the camera is too low to the ground to see the action and b) the walls blocks the view (as stated by the article).
On another note, what's up with the title link heading to your profile, Techbear? Checking out who is reading the story first before bumping? *grin*

Blatantly cheating AI is one of the most infuriating things about gaming, and I try as hard as possible to avoid it when designing/coding games. The real issue is that writing cheap AI is often easier; you get to access raw data and manually interpret it instead of having to "teach" the AI to see only what it should, and what it ultimately means to it.
